We’re converting our calculator packaging to paper for over 1,000 models sold around the world
All around the world, concern is growing regarding the problem of plastics not being properly processed after use and then entering the environment. As a company that uses plastic components in its manufacturing, Casio has been engaged in initiatives to make effective use of our planet’s finite resources, with the company now taking those initiatives to the next level.
Introducing the new calculator packaging!
Casio has begun an initiative to reduce the amount of plastic used compared to the past through a conversion to paper packaging. This initiative will greatly reduce the generation of plastic waste, while still maintaining proper product protection, transport efficiency, and packaged appearance.

Contributing to a lower burden on the environment
We’re converting our packaging to paper for over 1,000 models sold around the world.
Casio’s calculators are sold in over 100 countries. We’re gradually replacing the materials used in the packaging for all models with paper. (As of 2023)
Comparison of amount of plastic used (%)
Percentage reduction in amount of plastic used
By converting to paper packaging, the total amount of plastic used is projected to decrease by approximately 79% compared to the past (based on a comparison among Casio products). As a result, the amount of plastic used is expected to decrease by approximately 340 tons* annually.

Interview
How did this initiative get started?
It’s become very clear that, in the future, companies around the world will face greater expectations regarding the reduction of plastics. The packaging used for calculators is almost always simply thrown away after the product arrives in the user’s hands. This is why we need to reduce the burden on the environment as much as we can. We began our current initiative based on this thinking.
What sort of techniques did you use when replacing the materials used in the packaging?
The paper packaging has been designed so that it securely protects the products in the same way as plastic packaging. In addition, the size of the packaging has been reduced to allow for more units to be shipped at one time, which contributes to a reduction in CO2 emissions.
What challenges did you encounter during this initiative?
With the new packaging, you can’t see the actual product, and we had to think very carefully about what information to present on the packaging because it would be even smaller.
The things that customers are interested in the most vary by country or region, so we placed information in a way that aligned with their various needs.
What is your outlook for the future, and what are your future plans?
We’re just getting started on the transition to paper packaging.
In the future, we’d like to consider how to further improve our impact on the environment and develop measures that are unique to Casio.
The future of calculator packaging
In addition to our efforts to continuously improve various aspects of our calculators, such as their usability and display legibility, Casio is working to evolve paper packaging as one of its initiatives to contribute to the environment.
We are currently moving ahead with the replacement with paper of those parts of calculator packaging that still use plastic. Furthermore, in the future we aim to eliminate the use of plastic in all of our calculator packaging and to use paper in a more environmentally friendly way.
Through these activities, we will continuously contribute to the realization of a sustainable society in the future.
