COLLABORATION MODEL 2024

Collaboration with Aqua Planet:
Inspired by beautiful ocean areas that sustain coral

This watch is a collaboration with Aqua Planet, a non-profit that BABY-G has supported since 2018. The motif for the BA-110AQ is the five-lined coral goby fish (Gobiodon quinquestrigatus). The goby inhabits the Casio coral field, where Aqua Planet carries out coral restoration work. The design is inspired by this delightful fish, darting among the coral in a beautiful tropical sea.

AQUA PLANET

A non-profit organization dedicated to conserving coral reefs. Led by the actor Ritsuko Tanaka, who serves as president, the organization is committed to restoring and preserving coral. They are engaged in several collaborative conservation efforts including transplanting coral in Chatan (on Okinawa’s main island) and cultivating coral on the island of Ishigaki.

When Casio started providing support to Aqua Planet in January 2018, the company also established a coral field in the sea off Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture, planting 200 coral “seedlings” in hopes that they would reproduce in three years’ time. The Casio coral field lies in the shallow waters off Ishigaki’s southern coast, where the sea is only 4 metres deep at high tide. The coral coexists with a phytoplankton called zooxanthellae, and coral seedlings from more than seven resilient varieties were planted, including Acropora muricata. Now, over five years after planting, tiny fish swim among the mature coral as it continues to grow.

Dial design inspired by a coral reef

This collaborative model takes its cue from the BA-110. The complex dial with its unique shapes resembles the look of a coral reef, and the central design accent is coral pink. The Y-shaped component at the centre is adorned with a silhouette of a goby fish — a species which inhabits the Casio coral field — conveying the image of this adorable fish tucked in among the coral.
