Tokyo, January 24, 2024 — Casio Computer Co., Ltd., announced today that its mathematics education activities in the Arab Republic of Egypt and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh have been selected by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as EDU-Port Japan Supported Projects introducing Japanese-style education overseas. In January, Casio begins collaborating with the ministries of education and educational professionals in these two countries to develop mathematics lessons utilizing scientific calculators, provide teacher training, and conduct pilot classes to support learning in schools.

Under the mission statement Boost Your Curiosity (support “learning” and boost your “curiosity” towards learning), Casio’s educational business promotes the use of scientific calculators in schools worldwide through GAKUHAN activities, which include lesson development and teacher support.

EDU-Port Japan is a public-private initiative to introduce Japanese-style education overseas. Casio’s GAKUHAN activities in Egypt and Bangladesh were selected as supported projects in recognition of their effectiveness.

■ Key Project Initiatives in Egypt
In 2016, Egypt announced its Egypt Vision 2030 national sustainable development strategy and launched a new education reform project called Education 2.0, aiming to shift away from rote memory learning and promote inquiry-based learning. Targeting 7th grade students in lower secondary school (equivalent to the first year of junior high school in Japan) for whom a revised curriculum is planned to start in October 2024, Casio will provide learning packages designed to equip teachers and help students experience inquiry-based learning. In the first year, Casio will support schools by providing teaching materials utilizing scientific calculators, training for mathematics teachers, pilot classes, support for introducing lessons, and methods for evaluating effectiveness.

■ Key Project Initiatives in Bangladesh
Following Bangladesh’s long-term national development plan Vision 2041, formulated in 2020, the country’s curriculum is being updated by grade in stages starting in 2023. Coinciding with the January 2024 revision to the curriculum for 8th and 9th grade students in lower secondary school (equivalent to the second and third year of junior high school in Japan), Casio will provide updated teaching materials aligned with the new curriculum, train teachers, and follow-up at pilot schools.

Casio will also address the widespread circulation of counterfeit scientific calculators and promote the use of genuine Casio calculators to ensure that students have access to quality calculators.

Casio remains committed to enhancing educational quality worldwide and will continue to cooperate with education ministries and professionals to contribute to the field of education through GAKUHAN activities.
